Hughy A. Henry,
M.D., was born in York district, South Carolina, August 20, 1828. His father, Malcolm Henry, was born in the same district about 1796
(actual date Nov 9 1786), and in 1832 moved to Madison county,
Tennessee, and in 1834 to Pike county, Missouri, where he died in 1854 (actual
date Nov 26 1854), in the faith of the Old School Presbyterian church. The wife of Malcolm Henry bore the maiden name of Catherine
Allison (born April 29 1792, died Sept. 21, 1867, Pike Co. Mo.), and was also a native of York district, South Carolina.
Dr. Henry is the seventh of the nine children born to his parents and was reared in Pike county, Missouri. In 1850 he moved to Madison county, Tennessee, and in 1854 came to
Texas. He began the study of medicine in Madison county, Tennessee, in 1853, under Dr
E. L. Bumpas, afterward attended the Memphis Medical College, and since 1854 has been in regular practice.
March 10 1857, the doctor married Miss Texana Bell, daughter of William W. and Elizabeth (Weaver) Bell, and to this union were born two
children - Patrick D, and William M. Mrs. Henry departed this life in 1859, and in 1861 the doctor took for his second wife Miss Rebecca Pritchett, daughter of Joshua and Eliza (Inge) Pritchett of Pittsylvania
county, Virginia. Dr Henry owns a fine farm and is quite wealthy. He stands high
professioanlly [sic] and socially and for many years has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. He is also the oldest Free Mason in his county, having
joined the fraternity in 1852. |
